This Rolex submariner, exclusively used by British Army, is sold by auction years ago. With no model record, it has been washed out in the shallow sand for thirty year before it was found without water filtering.
Of course, the ancient submariner wristwatch can’t be compared to those with modern techniques. However, the ancient one is the basic need for the new launching. Without them, there is no modern style with high technique. The first generation Rolex submariner wristwatch is called pre-oyster by modern collectors. Its special waterproof design makes it become the competitive product. This pre-oyster style is made of double watch cases in design. Putting the inner case into the outside one makes the movement in inner case isolated from water. It seems that the wristwatch is put into a sealed plastic bag. The disadvantage is that each time we set the chain for the wristwatch; we have to open the outside case first in order to take out the inner one. It’s very inconvenient.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, Rolex cooperated with oyster Watch Company to produce the 1st oyster with screw-in crown and case bottom. The outer case where water can easily get in is screwed tightly with the function of waterproof. The design and manufacture level of Rolex oyster wristwatch at that time is at the beginning. So the wristwatches were just regarded as water-resistant ones. But the 1st oyster was once worn by a female swimmer across the England channel without water penetrating. The oyster watch case established its status in the market of submariner wristwatches by the good result.
